Authorities in Warrap State’s Twic County have asked the
wildlife department to deploy game wardens in Akoc Payam to protect residents
against deadly hippo attacks.
The call came after a hippo attacked Malual Awiel village
last weekend, killing a young girl, and injuring two others.
According to officials, the animal attacked the village
around 2 in the morning.
It bit Achel Akoch abekjok in the neck, killing the
16-year-old instantly.
The other girls - Angap Gou Deng, 10; and Awut Akol Angok,
8, suffered injuries to the thigh and stomach, respectively.
“I would like to ask the wildlife Department to assign
their staff to all the areas to monitor the violent act of the animals against
the people,” said 1st.-Lt. Ngor Agoth, police inspector in Akoc Payam,
The village is located approximately 12 kilometers away
from the Biltong River, which is infested with aquatic mammals.
Earlier this month, a hippo attacked and killed a fisherman
and left another hospitalized in Tonj East. Several other incidents occurred in
2022 and 2023 in the areas along the river.
Ngor argued that the presence of game wardens could
prevent reoccurrence of hippo attacks.
The wildlife authorities in Kuajok are yet to comment on
the matter.
