Twic youth reject vaccines against common illnesses

The head of health department in Twic County, Warrap State, has confirmed that citizens have rejected some deworming vaccines against multiple sicknesses.

Amos Yak Ring, director, said these vaccines are meant to prevent cholera, diarrhea, and skin disease among the children and adults.

Others are antibiotics syrups for children with pneumonia; antibiotics for adults; pain killers for those who complain a lot of pain; and deworming tablets to prevent diarrhea and other drugs.

“These deworming vaccines were donated by the UNMISS in Kuajok as a support to the government,” Yak told Mayardit FM on Thursday.

However, some members of the community interrupted the launch campaign, claiming that the UN of trying to poison the people.

“The statewide campaign was done in Kuajok yesterday; and today, we had wanted to do the launch for Twic County. While at the freedom square, the youth stormed the area and told us to go. They also told the people who attended the campaign to go,’’ he said.

Amos further confirmed that people said they have not been informed of the vaccination campaign.

Mayardit FM contacted some people who attended the event but they declined to comment.

In 2022, malaria was the leading cause of morbidity, accounting for 36 percent of total primary healthcare consultations, followed by diarrhea (13 percent), both of which are major contributors to malnutrition, according to UNICEF February 2023 report.
