
The Twic community of Warrap State, is mourning the passing of veteran journalist and leader Bona Malwal Madut Ring, who died on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at 97.
Born in 1928, Bona Malwal dedicated his life to standing up for the people of South Sudan.
He played a pivotal role in the 1972 Addis Ababa Agreement,
which granted greater autonomy to the southern region during Sudan’s first
civil war.
Malwal was also a writer and thinker. He founded newspapers
and authored articles that helped citizens understand politics and history.
Throughout his career, he worked closely with leaders such
as Sudan’s President Jaafar Nimeiri and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir.
In 2005, he contributed to the peace agreement that
eventually led to South Sudan’s independence in 2011.
Even in his later years, he continued advising young leaders
and sharing his wisdom.
Family members reported that he had been ill since May,
though the exact cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.
His passing was confirmed by both his family and the
Paramount Chief of Ajak Kuac Payam, Tor Makol Madut Ring.
Reflecting on the loss, Chief Tor said, “What happened to
our elder Bona Malwal? I received a phone call yesterday evening with the sad
news that he has passed away.”
“I have been following his health closely since May,
checking on him regularly. Last night, I was urgently informed that he had
died. It is a painful moment for all of us.”
The late served as a senior elder of the Twic community and
was a prominent member of the Jieng Council of Elders, helping to guide
traditional leadership and national dialogue.
In honor of his passing, the Twic County local government
has declared three days of mourning, from Monday, November 3rd to Wednesday,
November 6.
