The newly elected chairlady of the Toposa Women Association in Eastern Equatoria State has urged the women to support their husbands financially and become self-reliant.

Eunice Nakwar says many women still hold on to cultural beliefs that place the full responsibility for providing for the family on men.

“Let us leave long ago norms where it’s says a man is the only one who can do everything, women should help men,”Nakwar urged.

Nakwar encouraged women to engage in small businesses and activities that generate income to help lighten the financial load on their partners as she called for a change in mindset.

“You go and do business. As you can see from the market, it is foreigners who are dominating the market right now. You also need to do business such that you can help your husband. If the husband does not have a job a woman should help providing to the children,” she said.

Nakwar emphasized that women can contribute meaningfully to household needs. She called on them to embrace self-reliance and economic empowerment.
