Tonj man shoots dead girlfriend’s brother

Police in Tonj South County, Warrap State, are searching for a man suspected of shooting dead his girlfriend’s brother two days ago.

The incident took place at Adama cattle camp in Manyang Ngok Payam on Tuesday night , according to the police inspector there.

Lt. David Bol says the victim, Kuol Mading, had just found his sister seated next to her boyfriend when he forced her to return to their cattle camp.

The 24-year-old man — who appeared to have not approved of the relationship — slapped his sister Aruop in the face in an attempt to get her to leave. Bol said he actually followed her.

But Kuol later returned to “identify” his sister’s boyfriend, whom the authorities declined to name in a bid to prevent revenge.

“He came back again to his sister’s boyfriend to identify him. But the man shot him dead and immediately fled the scene,” Lt. Bol told Mayardit FM.

The police inspector added that the authorities are holding the 19-year-old girl, whom they believe will help in the investigation process.

This is the second time this month a life has been lost to a dating-related incident in Manyang Ngok.

On January 1, a man named Malong Angong reportedly took his own life after he accidentally shot his girlfriend in the thigh.

Article 206 of the South Sudan Penal Code 2008 states that whoever causes the death of another person— with the intention of causing death or knowing that death would be the probable commits the offense of murder.

“And upon conviction be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life, and may also be
liable to a fine; provided that, if the nearest relatives of the deceased opt for customary blood compensation, the Court may award it in lieu of death sentence with imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years,” it reads.
