The latest fighting in Tonj East County, Warrap State,
has reportedly left 45 people dead and 50 others injured.
The intercommunal violence broke out on Saturday and
resumed on Sunday.
According to officials, it was triggered by cattle
rustling incident.
Officials say Thiik and Luacjang sections fought against
Akok after suspected armed youth from Akok attempted to raid cattle from Thiik.
“It was bad because women and children and the elderly
people were the ones who suffered most in the clashes,” said Deng Madut Akuei,
inspector of police.
However, he said calm has returned to the area after
forces were deployed in the area.
“So, my appeal is that the national government and our
state government should deploy more forces to prevent more attacks,” Akuei
added.
Mayardit FM’s efforts to reach the state government for
comment were not immediately unsuccessful.
