Teachers in Aweil threaten to sue salary committee

Teachers in Northern Bhar El Ghazal State said if the ministry of education does not intervene, they will sue the salary payment committee for deducting their salaries without clarification.

According to teachers, each of them is supposed to receive 114,000 but they received 94,300 SSP indicating deduction of amount close to 20,000 SSP per teacher in grade seven.

James Yel Yel, a teacher from Salva Kiir Modern Secondary School said they demand urgent answers before the drag the committee to court.

“I’m asking the committee why they are paying us less than other ministries while we are in the same State?” Yel asked. “We were expecting to get more allowances in July than what we got in last payment.”

Another teacher with the same grievances, Bona Garang Deng said teachers should not be treated this way given the great role they play.

“We are ready to open case against this issue because teachers are doing great roles with this little payment, yet their salary is cut without proper reason,” Garang stated.

Director General in the state Ministry of Education, Santino Bol Akot said the ministry was not aware of salary deduction, but pledged to follow up the case and have the teachers get their deducted money in the next payment.

“We will follow this case and I’m sure they will get their cuts amount next payment. Yes, we got this after staff already received their salary,” Bol assured the teachers who received their one-month salary for July 2023.

He appealed to to be patient as their case is being handled.
