South Sudan and Russia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation and diplomatic relations during celebrations marking Russia’s National Unity Day in Juba.

Gen. Ayor Akuoch Anok, Caretaker Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs, said the occasion provided an opportunity to renew the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the two countries.

“We celebrate this important occasion that has renewed our commitment to strengthening the bonds of freedom, friendship, and cooperation between South Sudan and the Russian Federation,” Gen. Akuoch said on Friday.

Russian Ambassador to South Sudan, Aleksandr Kosmodemiyanskiy, underscored the importance of national unity, mutual respect and shared responsibility in overcoming challenges and advancing national interests.

“The Russian flag is already symbolizing the unity of our people, the continuity of our historical traditions, and our shared responsibility for the future of our motherland,” Kosmodemiyanskiy said.

“This day reminds us of unity, mutual respect, and common commitment to national interests enable us to overcome all challenges and move forward with confidence.”

Russia marks National Unity Day on November 4 each year, commemorating the 1612 uprising led by the Second Volunteer Militia under Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, with support mobilized by Kuzma Minin.

The holiday is marked by cultural exhibitions, concerts, festivals and public ceremonies celebrating Russia’s diverse ethnic communities and historical traditions.

The celebrations come days after South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and Russian President Vladimir Putin held talks at the Kremlin on October 30 during Kiir’s visit to Moscow for the Russia-Africa summit.

The two leaders discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation, focusing on trade, investment, energy, security and education.

During the visit, South Sudan and Russia also signed an agreement establishing a joint intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, aimed at strengthening collaboration in the identified areas.
