South Africa has reaffirmed its full support for South Sudan’s 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement during a high-level meeting between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and South African Deputy President Paul Mashatile in Juba, on Thursday.
Mashatile, who also serves as South Africa’s Presidential
Special Envoy to South Sudan, held talks with President Kiir to assess progress
in implementing the peace accord and explore ways to advance its key provisions
ahead of the planned elections in December 2026.
Speaking after the meeting, South Sudan’s Ambassador to South Africa, Simon Duku, said the two-day visit, which began on Wednesday, aims to strengthen political cooperation and deepen Pretoria’s support for South Sudan’s peace implementation process.
“The visit is aimed at enhancing political cooperation and
deepen support for the ongoing peace implementation process,” Duku said. “Such
engagement is crucial in guaranteeing a peaceful and democratic transition in
the country. “
South African Ambassador to South Sudan, Mahlodi Muofhe,
described the meeting as “cordial and constructive,” saying it reaffirmed both
nations’ shared belief that the implementation of the peace agreement remains
the foundation for lasting stability.
Muofhe emphasized the importance of continued collaboration
between Juba and Pretoria, particularly in areas of investment and economic
development, which he said could benefit both nations.
Officials noted that South Sudan and South Africa share a historical
bond rooted in the struggle for liberation, which continues to inspire their
strong bilateral relations and cooperation in peacebuilding efforts.
The 2018 Peace Agreement outlines several provisions,
including the making of a permanent constitution, transitional security
arrangements, and preparations for national elections, key steps toward a
peaceful conclusion of the transitional period.
The visit by Deputy President Mashatile underscores South
Africa’s ongoing commitment to peace, stability, and democratic progress in
South Sudan.
