Police said at least seven people were killed and 15 others wounded in fighting between the Abang and Malual sections of the Bor community in Jonglei State on Tuesday evening.
The violence erupted at Malual Chaat Boma in Kolnyang Payam
after a cultural dance turned violent, though authorities did not give details
on what triggered the fighting.
Police spokesperson Captain Akech Mapiou Dau said the
clashes began with sticks before escalating to gunfire.
“The violence started at the cultural dance site with sticks
and involved guns, which resulted in the killing of six people and 14 others
injured from Malual Section, while one was killed and another wounded from
Abang section on Tuesday evening,” Dau said.
Joint security forces comprised of SSPDF, National Security
and other organized forces have been deployed to contain the situation.
“Now people are calm and security is stable, while
government is seeking for the culprits to bring them to book,” Dau stated.
Dau said no suspects had been arrested, but local
authorities and community leaders are engaging youth to provide information
that could lead to the arrest of suspected ring leaders.
He appealed to the two sections to remain calm and allow the law to take its due course.
