His Holiness Pope Leo XIV has called on the government of South Sudan to achieve lasting peace and stability after years of civil unrest.

The Pope’s message was delivered through the Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, His Grace Seamus Patrick Hogan, during a meeting with Vice President H.E. Prof. James Wani Igga in Juba on Thursday.

“His Holiness Pope Leo XIV wishes the government of South Sudan to realize lasting peace in the nation to bring stability after long suffering from the unrest of civil wars,” Hogan said in a statement issued by VP office.

During the meeting, Archbishop Hogan conveyed greetings from the Holy Father and emphasized the Pope’s desire for the nation to heal and flourish after the prolonged suffering caused by civil wars.

In response, Vice President Wani Igga expressed gratitude to the Church for its prayers and steadfast support for peace in South Sudan.

He assured the Apostolic Nuncio that the government remains committed to promoting lasting peace and organizing credible elections, giving citizens the opportunity to freely choose their leaders.

Both leaders highlighted the importance of continued collaboration between the Church and the government in fostering reconciliation, unity, and sustainable development across the nation.

The Vatican’s call comes at a critical time for South Sudan, as the country seeks to consolidate peace and ensure stability for its citizens after years of conflict.
