At least 100 women in Twic County, Warrap State, have volunteered to clear the Turalei airstrip in preparation for the arrival of the casket of the late Bona Malual Madut from Juba.
The late Bona Malual, a veteran journalist and respected community leader, passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 93.
According to Panther Yor Yach, a representative of the
volunteer group, the women took the initiative after visiting the airstrip and
finding it in poor condition.
“We are very saddened by the rough condition of the airport,
which is the reason we volunteered to prevent any harm to our visitors that
could result in injuries,” Yor explained to Mayardit FM in an interview on
Wednesday.
“Our main goal is simply to smooth and clear the cow
footprints at the airport.”
Madam Adior Nyuol Riak, one of the women’s group members at
the airstrip, called on local chiefs, youth, and well-wishers to join the
efforts in clearing the airport.
“We urge the executive to come and extend their help. If
they know that this airstrip belongs to them, they can assist us in cleaning
the airport in the days before the arrival of the body of the late Bona Malual,”
Adior stated.
“We also urge the government to support this work to avoid
the risk of injuries caused by the rough parts of the airport.”
Earlier this week, authorities in Twic County announced that preparations for grave digging had started and would take five days before the burial of the veteran journalist and community leader, the late Bona Malual Madut Ring, in Ajak Payam.
