At least 110 families in Aweil South County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, have received a donation of solar-powered radios, marking a significant step toward improving information access at the grassroots level.
The primary goal of the donation is to enable communities to
access vital information, addressing their previous complaints about the lack
of radio access and ensuring they are not isolated.
Simon Lual Buk, County Information Officer, emphasized the
profound impact of having access to reliable news and communication.
“The radio is essential because if you sit with your radio
beside you, it means you are not alone. Without it, sitting at home is like
being in a dark place,” Lual told Akol Yam FM in an interview.
“These 110 solar powered radios were distributed yesterday
in Aweil South to improve access to information across the community.”
The distribution, conducted on Monday this week was
supported by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and Farmers
Live Development Agency.
Community members expressed deep gratitude for their
support, pledging to use the radios responsibly for their benefit.
“As one of the beneficiaries, we will now be able to get
accurate information, whether it is from Juba or elsewhere, through the radio,”
Garang Agou stated.
Another beneficiary, Majak Mamir, said, “I would like to
request that the supporting partners increase the number of radios so that
everyone can have one, as the demand is high and the quantity distributed was
small.”
The community stressed the need for further distribution in
the future to meet the high demand.
