A health organization will perform free cataract operations in Tonj South County this week, an official said.
Cataract is a condition that can affect the eye causing clouding of the lens, a gradual progression of the vision and if not treated may result to vision loss.
For people who have cataracts, seeing through cloudy lenses is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window.
According to the minister of health in Warrap State, about 400 people are suffering from the eye disease in the area.
Dr Barach Malith told families that they are required to cover patients’ accommodation and travel expenses.
“They will start on 3rd of November up to ten of November next month,” he said. “The operation cost and drugs are free but the travel cost and accommodation are the responsibility of the patient.”
Dr. Malith urged the public to not miss the chance for free cataract treatment by Samaritan’s Purse.
Cataract surgery—a simple enough procedure in Western countries—is nearly impossible to access in South Sudan, according to Samaritan’s Purse.
When people’s eyes begin to cloud with cataracts, it is typically only a matter of time before they reach complete blindness
