A telecommunication company, MTN South Sudan has made a landmark commitment to the country’s football scene by donating USD 300,000 to support the ongoing first-ever South Sudan Premier League.

The sponsorship, valued at USD 100,000 per year for the next three years, was announced on Monday, marking a significant investment in the future of football in the country.

Speaking at the launch, Ali Monzer, MTN South Sudan’s Chief Executive Officer, emphasized the importance of this financial backing for both the league and the youth of South Sudan.

"I am honored to stand here today with you as we are celebrating the kick-off of the NTN sponsorship. It's more than just a celebration. We are celebrating talent. Celebrating unity. And we are celebrating NTN, South Sudan's belief in the transformative power of sports,” Monzer said.

He stated that that sport instills teamwork resilience and discipline in young people.

The investment is a major boost for the South Sudan Premier League, which features 14 local teams.

They include Malakia SC, Al Hilal S.C, Kator FC, Wajuma FC, Nile City FC, Olympics FC, El Meriekh SC, Young Stars FC, Bentiu City SC, Koryom FC, Salam FC, Jamus SC, Holy Family FC and Lion Hunters FC.

The donation aims to provide financial support, promote youth development, foster unity through sports and connect communities.

Mr. Augustino Maduot, president of South Sudan Football Association (SSFA), urged other companies to invest in football.

"Football is healthy. Football is the power. Football is social cohesion. Football is an identity. It's a cultural promotion. It's a business. And other companies should come in to support this premier league,” Maduot asserted.

Maduot noted that the SSFA has plans for various leagues, including a women’s league and youth competitions that need financial support.

"So, these are things that you take a spot out and then you work with us as a partner. And then we promote football in our country. We put more peace and unity in our country,” he added.

The South Sudan Premier League was launched on 21st December 2024 in Juba.
