Mayen losses job as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs

Peter Mayen Majongdit has lost his job following a Presidential decree that fired him as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

Mr. Mayen was relieved this evening through a republican decree read on the state television in Juba.

He was appointed in March 2020 as a nominee of the Other Political Parties, a signatory to the revitalized peace agreement.

It is not clear if Mayen’s dismissal came as a recommendation from his party as required by the peace deal.

The decree did not provide reasons for the changes.

There was no immediate replacement made for the position of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management.

In August 2021, Mr. Mayen was also dismissed from his People’s Liberal Party (PLP). He was relieved of the chairmanship role and stripped of membership. This is after he was accused of mismanaging party affairs and engaging in domestic violence.

The same year, some South Sudanese women activists petitioned President Kiir to dismiss Mayen after he was accused of beating his wife and stopping her from participating in a soccer match.

Mayen has denied all the accusations.
