Kiir replaces IGP

President Salva Kiir has fired the Inspector General of Police, Majak Akech Malok, who had held the position since February 2018.

Akech has been replaced with Gen Atem Marol Biar, according to a republican decree read out on the state-run SSBC on Tuesday evening.

Until this evening, Marol was the director-general of the Directorate of Civil Registry, Nationality, Passports and Immigration – a position he assumed in May 2021.

The decree did not give any reason for the replacement of Akech.

However, his dismissal comes a day after the national parliament summoned him, along other senior officials at the Ministry of Interior over unlawful directives and utterances.
