President Salva Kiir has directed the new Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Yeni Samuel Costa, to quickly address the serious cash shortage affecting the country.

"The Head of State urged the leadership of the BoSS to ensure the bank lives up to its mandate of maintaining price stability and promoting a healthy domestic economy," the Office of the President said in a statement.

Despite launching a National Instant Payment system earlier this year to boost digital transactions, the liquidity crisis has persisted.

The Financial Intelligence Unit under the National Security Service has also warned the public against hoarding cash at home, saying those found with large sums risk penalties.

Officials say they hope the new Central Bank leadership will restore confidence, implement reforms, and improve the flow of cash and financial services.

Yeni replaces Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, who was removed last week.

President Kiir also swore in the chairperson and members of the National Communication Authority Board, urging them to expand reliable and accessible communication services across the country.
