South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit has appointed Arek Aldo Ajou Deng as the new press secretary in the Office of the President.

The appointment was announced in a statement dated February 23 and issued under Republican Decree No. 65/2026. The announcement made by Africano Mande Gedima, minister of presidential affairs, said the decision takes effect immediately.

Arek replaces David Amuor Major, who was relieved of his duties on February 3. The position had remained vacant for about three weeks.

Before her appointment, Arek served as chief executive officer of the Luol Deng Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 2005 that promotes youth empowerment through sports and education initiatives.

She is the sister of former NBA All-Star Luol Deng, who currently serves as president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation. She is also the daughter of Aldo Ajou Deng Akuei, a veteran South Sudanese politician.
