The Jonglei State Governor, Majub Biel, has suspended the minister of Finance, Planning, and Investment over corruption allegations.

In 2022, Abraham Riek Yuek faced initial accusations of embezzling public funds, causing the cabinet to issue a vote of no confidence against him.

In a letter seen by Mingkaman FM, the governor based his decision on a vote of no confidence that the cabinet passed then.

On December 16, 2024, the governor revived this vote of no confidence, leading to the suspension of the minister.

“In reference to the letter regarding the vote of no confidence for the minister...dated 10th August 2022 and a reminder letter dated 16th December 2024, as well as the legal opinion on the vote of no confidence for the minister of finance dated July 23, 2024, I hereby confirm that the minister has lost legitimacy to serve in this position. Therefore, effective immediately, he is suspended,” partly reads the letter.

The suspension of the minister nullified the suspension of the Director General, who was accused of corruption in his ministerial order dated December 16.

After declining the phone calls, Riek was unable to respond.

However, the amount of which the minister is accused of mismanaging remains unclear.
