Professor John Akec has underscored the importance of good governance as the foundation for South Sudan's agricultural transformation, stating that peace, stability, and functional institutions are essential for the sector to thrive.

Speaking at the Juba Economic Forum on Wednesday, Akec stated that achieving the country's economic stability through commercial agriculture requires addressing systemic governance and rule of law issues.

“Good governance is vital. It is how the judiciary is managed. How it operates and how laws are effective," Akec said.

"You find sometimes a piece of land is sold five times. And the court will be in no position to resolve."

Akec also emphasized that peace and security are equally crucial, noting they would pave the way for meaningful agricultural activity and attract investment into the sector.

Last Tuesday, forum participants recommended allocating farmland, expanding credit and food security, upgrading feeder roads, offering subsidized agribusiness licenses, and strengthening cooperatives to boost production.

Held under the theme “Promoting Commercial Agriculture as a Pathway Towards Economic Stability,” the three‑day forum convened policymakers, academics, and agricultural stakeholders to chart a course for reviving South Sudan’s farming sector.
