A public court in Gogrial East County of Warrap State has sent to jail a 37-year-old woman for producing and selling banned local alcoholic drink.
Awien Manut was also ordered to pay 150,000 Pounds for dealing in “dakaya”, according to the verdict pronounced on Thursday.
The mother of seven children was making a living from the illicit brew in Liethhom town. The drink was banned in the area in 2019.
Col Madut Anei, police inspector in Gogrial East County, confirmed the judgment to Mayardit FM, saying Ms Manut had been warned several times.
“She was sentenced by the local court today to three years in jail and a fine of 150,000 Pounds. She was warned several but she continued ignoring the warnings,” Madut stated.
Officials argue that the local drink is easily accessible to young people because they it is cheap and thus they abuse it.
