River flooding has displaced over 600 people from 228 households across 67 villages in Mangol Payam, Gogrial East County, Warrap State.
According to Payam Administrator David Atem, the affected
villages include Malual-Ador, Ajakdit, Magok, and Majak-Nyuom. He described the
dire conditions faced by the displaced residents.
“They are stranded and living in very difficult conditions.
No one knew that there would be flooding this year because there was not much
rain in the area, but water came from the river. They also don’t have mosquito
nets; now in the market they share one mosquito net, and they are also facing
hunger because their crops are damaged,” Atem said.
Residents have sought refuge in open areas, along roadsides,
and in local markets such as Malual-Ador Market, Magol Market, and Akuchdit.
Atem appealed for immediate humanitarian assistance:
Relief and Rehabilitation Coordinator Mathiang Manout Theip
assured that efforts are underway to mobilize aid for the affected communities.
“I want to tell them to be patient, and that they can also
help themselves. I will send a message to the partners to support them, but
they should help themselves first, and the support will come later,” Manout
said.
