Fighting between Apuk and Wau resumed, leaving three dead

The Warrap minister of information said that in fresh fighting between the Wau and Apuk communities on Sunday, twenty tukul houses were set on fire and three persons were confirmed dead.

Wau is a community in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, neighboring Gogrial East County in Warrap State.

The incident is said to have occurred in Matiel Boma-Manyam Payam of Gogrial East County around 3:00 a.m.

William Wol Mayom, the minister of information in Warrap State, says that the attackers are believed to be from a neighboring community in Western Bahr el Ghazal State, an allegation Mayardit 90.7 FM has independently not verified.

He exhorts the two communities to embrace harmony and peace in order to live in peace.

“The incident occurred around 3 p.m.; they attacked Matiel village, and the armed attackers were wearing military and police uniforms,” William narrated.

“Now the governor of Warrap, Kuol Muor Muor, and Governor Rin Tueny Mabor have gone to Wau to meet the governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal to discuss ways forward to stop the continuous fighting between the communities of Apuk and Wau,” he continued.

Last December 2023, at least eleven people died, and three others were injured in renewed fighting between the Apuk and Wau communities.

The two communities have been clashing over the disputed Manyang area.

Earlier, the Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal state governments allowed the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces and a police force to take charge of the disputed Manyang area.
