An SSPDF soldier reportedly killed himself due to economic
hardships in Gogrial West County, Warrap State, on Wednesday.
Private Bol Wieu Bol was serving under Division 11 in the
Majak Tiit area.
According to police, the 29-year-old soldier recently took a
leave of absence on Monday to see his wife and children.
His family's harsh living conditions overwhelmed the father
of four children upon his return home to Keet village, Alek West Payam.
"He observed his children's situation silently while he
had no way to help them," said Col. Joseph Mathony, police inspector.
"At around 6:00 p.m., he killed himself to the surprise of the
family."
A soldier's monthly salary is SSP39,000, which is equivalent
to around $13.
In addition, civil servants endure extended periods without
receiving their little wages, exacerbating the hardships faced by soldiers like
Bol Wieu.
Following its independence in 2011, South Sudan has
encountered a multifaceted humanitarian catastrophe, with children being the
most impacted.
The outbreak of conflict, natural catastrophes, poverty, and
widespread displacement has led to a significant increase in food insecurity,
hunger, and malnutrition.
