Drivers
in Warrap State are voicing concern over the deteriorating condition of the
road linking Kuajok to Twic County, warning that the situation is endangering
lives and livelihoods.
According
to drivers, the road has become increasingly unsafe for travelers, particularly
patients seeking urgent medical attention. Goods are also being damaged as
vehicles frequently get stuck or break down along the highways connecting
Gogrial, Twic, and Abyei.
Deng
Deng Anei, a driver on the route, said the journey from Kuajok to Twic can now
take up to three days.
“The
country should not be left in the hands of traders alone. It’s traders and
drivers who are doing their best to ensure goods reach citizens. But where is
the government? This should be a collective effort. Sometimes traders even give
drivers money to remove stuck vehicles to serve the community,” he said.
Another
driver, Deng Bang Deng from Turalei Payam, said he is considering abandoning
the job due to the risks involved. He reported that two vehicles broke down
yesterday along Wunrock road.
“We
kindly beg our government to help us with the challenges of poor roads and find
a solution. Through road connections, we get food and transport patients. Even
short distances, like from here to Ajak Kuac, are very hard to reach,” he
appealed.
In
response, Makoor Mangok Kuot, Press Secretary to the Governor of Warrap State,
assured residents that road rehabilitation is a top priority for the state
government. He confirmed that the governor is currently in Juba, engaging with
the National Ministry of Roads and Bridges.
“The
National Ministry of Roads and Bridges is in talks with the governor to address
poor road accessibility. This is a key issue being discussed by both state and
national governments. An announcement will be made soon. Road renovation is one
of the governor’s top priorities,” he stated.
