Nine people lost their lives in a fight at the Bioth-Agany fishing area in
Twic East County last week, according to the Jonglei State police commissioner.
Eight people sustained injuries in the same attack on both sides of Hol in
Duk County and Ayual in Twic East County.
On Monday, Maj.-Gen. Elia Costa told Mingkaman FM that the deceased
individuals were from the Hol community.
Hol and Ayual communities have a standing conflict after they fought last
year in the same fishing area, resulting in the killing of four, including a
prominent wrestler, Deng Dau-Muoradong.
Many observers have attributed the escalation of this conflict to the
government's perceived incompetence in managing the situation, as evidenced by
the delay in arresting prime suspects.
In what was believed to be revenge for the deceased persons from last year,
Ayual carried out a deadly attack on Hol camp in Toch in June, killing seven
people and leaving ten others with gunshot wounds.
The state failed to deploy security, which resulted in the Friday attack
that claimed nine lives and injured eight more.
No one has been arrested in connection with the recent fight, but Maj.-Gen.
Costa said they have deployed police forces to stay there for a fortnight to
help contain the situation.
“We have arrangements; we have a force that is moving there right now to
stay there for some weeks to bring stability,” he added.
