A civil society group in Jonglei has commended the state
governor for finally 'relocating' his office to Bor Town.
Until last month, Denay Jock Chagor had been operating from
Juba a hotel in Juba since he assumed office in July 2020.
His stay in Juba attracted criticism from some residents of Jonglei
State, with some describing him as a “ceremonious governor”.
This is because, they claimed, Chagor would travel to Bor
only when there were new officials to be sworn in.
When summoned by the state parliament in October 2023, he cited
“insecurity” as the reason for living in Juba, though he could not give further
details.
However, the governor was often in disagreement with his then deputy, Antipas
Nyok Kucha – an SPLM representative, whom Kiir later fired.
With his presence in the state capital, the chairperson of Jonglei
State Civil Society Network says the area has witnessed developmental
activities.
“When the governor was not in the state, the whole
government sat back and relaxed. They didn’t even want to work at their
respective institutions,” Bol Deng Bol told Mingkaman FM on Thursday.
Recently, the state government launched the 2022-2024
development plans, which include revitalization of the construction of the central
bank branch in Bor, and peace dialogues in the state and with its neighbors.
The other developmental activities are the construction of
feeder roads and allocation of pieces of land to the internally displaced families.
“The governor was present in all these and among others. So,
his supervisory role in everything in Jonglei State is critical,” Bol added.
