Authorities in Narus, Kapoeta East County of Eastern Equatoria State, say calm has returned after the arrest of three suspected gang members accused of fueling insecurity in the area.
Last week, residents raised alarm over increasing gang
activity that forced many to stay indoors as early as 5:00 pm out of fear.
Speaking to Singaita 88.3 FM on Monday, Kapoeta East County
Executive Director Tisian Tafeng confirmed the arrests, saying the suspects
will appear in court this week.
“We have arrested three, and today [Monday] they will be
taken to court for trial. For almost five days now, nothing has been reported
because the security on the ground is monitoring the activities. It has become
peaceful, and even the communities have appreciated the efforts done by the
soldiers,” Tafeng said.
Tafeng added that security forces are still pursuing others
believed to be linked to the group, and he urged parents to take responsibility
for guiding their children, warning that negligence at home often drives young
people into bad groups.
“My message to the parents and the public is that we need to
control our kids, because all these problems arise when some parents do not
care about their children and do not even check if they are at home or if they
have eaten. There is a need for all of us to take responsibility,” he stressed.
Residents have since applauded the swift action of security
forces, saying peace has largely been restored to the town.
