Nathaniel Garang Anyieth, the first Anglican Bishop of Bor, has died at the age of 86 in Nairobi, the Episcopal Diocese of Juba announced on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by Metropolitan Bishop Dr. Justin Badi Arama.

Consecrated in 1984, Bishop Garang served as the pioneer diocesan bishop of Bor’s Episcopal Church of South Sudan and was widely respected for his spiritual leadership, humility, and dedication to his community.

“He served his people with courage, humility, and a pastoral heart. He gave hope and spiritual guidance to the people of South Sudan throughout the liberation struggle,” said Bishop Arama in the statement.

The diocese called for prayers for his family and for arrangements to return his remains to South Sudan from Nairobi, Kenya, where he passed away.
