Aweil teacher sexually assaults student, flees

Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have detained five teachers after their colleague accused of sexually attacking his student escaped.

The victim, according to the state police spokesperson, is a 17-year-old girl Form 3 student at the Corner Stones’ Vision Academy.

The student had met the teacher somewhere in town when he forced himself on her. The teenager then told her parents, who reported the matter to the police.

The teachers were rounded up on Tuesday after they failed to identify the main suspect, a Ugandan national.

Capt Guot Akol told Akol Yam FM that the suspects were being held to help in the investigations.

“The five people we have apprehended are not the suspects, but they were detained to help in the investigation,” Akol said.

Some sources have identified the suspect as Francis Oliatum, a geography and history teacher at the private school.

The administration of the school has confirmed the incident and condemned the attack, describing it as a violation of the code of conduct.

“Conner Stones’ Vision Academy has strong rules and regulations for both teachers and the learners. This is a book we have written and called code of conduct,” said Valentino Achak, founder of the school.

“This prevents relationship in school between teachers and leaners, and that is why the teacher who escaped submitted his resignation. He knew that nothing is going to save him again to continue teaching.”

However, appealed to the parents to treat the matter is as an isolated incident and allow the authorities to look into it.
