AU Commission chair hails China’s role in Africa’s growth

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has commended China for its longstanding dedication to African development, citing its considerable role in many key sectors.

Youssouf spoke on Wednesday in Addis Ababa during a farewell ceremony with Hu Changchun, the outgoing Ambassador of the People's Republic of China to the African Union. He thanked the ambassador for his service and appreciated China's contribution as the force propelling success in the development of such sectors as trade, infrastructure development, agriculture, health, and capacity development.

He expressed gratitude in a statement for China's contribution towards the development of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), its contribution to peacekeeping operations on the continent, and its investment in critical social sectors.

The officials both spoke of the successes of the Beijing 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit, attesting to the AU-China relationship as the model of successful multilateralism.

Youssouf was optimistic about the prospects of the relationship and also spoke of his eagerness to attend the 2025 China-Africa Ministerial Conference, which he believes is a major platform to further strengthen bilateral ties.

The meeting reaffirmed robustness of the AU-China bond and their common dedication to pursuing the continent’s sustainable development and growth.
