The South Sudan Artists’ Union has called for dialogue between artists and security institutions following the release of popular musician John Frog after his brief detention in Juba.

John Frog was allegedly arrested by security operatives on Wednesday and later released after a brief detention.

His release came amid growing public concern and reactions from fellow musicians after a viral video appeared to show the artist being beaten by members of the security organs.

The singer is currently receiving treatment in Juba after sustaining minor injuries during the incident.

Nyambura Kenyi, Secretary General of the South Sudan Artists' Union, appreciated efforts by the government that contributed to resolving the matter peacefully and urged all parties to prioritize communication to prevent future confrontations.

“We welcome peaceful resolutions and encourage continuing dialogue between artists and security institutions to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future,” Kenyi said in a statement on Thursday in Juba.

The union noted that constructive engagement between the creative sector and law enforcement bodies is important for promoting mutual understanding, safety, and respect for artists’ rights.

“The union remains committed to constructive engagement in promoting creative arts and national unity for all,” he added.

As of Thursday, security organs had not publicly commented on the matter.
