Another death from banditry reported on Torit-Kapoeta road

Banditry along Torit-Kapoeta road claimed another life on Thursday in Eastern Equatoria state.

Police have, however, arrested two suspects.

The attack on the treacherous highway happened around Iloli villages.

Authorities said a commercial truck carrying four travelers and goods fell into an ambush at around 4PM – resulting in the death of a South Sudanese national.

Three other Eritrean businessmen were wounded in the attack.

The State Acting Police Commissioner, Major General John Luony said the truck was transporting goods to Chukudum in Budi County.

He said two suspects are in police custody.

“We arrested two of them…they are now in police custody for further investigation. In fact, when the operation car went there those two people were found at the crime scene, they just came out of the bush and they met our car and they stopped and said we are not the one doing this,” he mentioned.

The wounded businessmen are currently receiving treatment in Torit Civil Hospital.

Dr. Mustafa Lokuru, the Medical Director at the hospital told Singaita FM that one of the victims sustained serious gunshot wounds.

“One is somehow critical because he was shot in the side of the testicle. So he is still under medication, and the others are stable,” he said.

Major General John Luony said the state police is planning to beef up security along the roads to curb crimes ahead of Christmas.

He advised the public to report any criminal activity to the police.

“Come to police and police will come immediately to that area of the incident or any robbery.”
