Wrestling dispute claims life in Awerial

The deputy Payam Administrator for Puluk in Awerial County has confirmed that one person died, and three others injured in a fighting at the weekend.

On Saturday, a wrestling between Koc Adiith and Julook communities turned violent after Thon Makech and Duoi Deng Parieng fought on the field while wrestling.

The youth from both sides jumped at each other using sticks, prompting a soldier to break up the fighting.

John Ariik Makeer said the unnamed officer shot in the air to disperse the youth. However, he accidentally shot dead a fan, Chuti Makueth Ariath.

He stated that calm has returned to the area after the ring leaders only identified as Thon and Duoi were arrested.

“As we talk now, there is no tension because the two sections have been separated and the ring leaders were handed over to the government,” the administrator added.

For his part, Awerial County Commissioner Philip Mawut said those who opened fire on the people were also detained.

“We have arrested the soldiers who misused their guns and are in the military detention facility here in Mingkaman,” he stated.
