The Rizeigat Peace Committee has rejected the blood compensation for a man killed at Kiir Kak-Beek in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State last month.

In April, a South Sudanese soldier killed Adam Brama Jubara, 51, the father of five children, due to a reported misunderstanding with his daughter.

Rizeigat and Dinka Malual reached an agreement in January 2024 that stipulates a blood compensation of SSP 5.1 million, equivalent to 41 cows at the time of the agreement.

The secretary for the Dinka Malual peace committee, Majok Deng Akuach-dit, told Akol Yam FM that the Rizeigat community has rejected the cash, citing inflation.

As of Tuesday, SSP 5.1 million is worth about 25 heads of cattle.

“They say if not 41 cows, then they have to forget about it, and that means they are to avenge their tribesman, which is not good. So, we brought the case before the government to look into it,” Deng said on Tuesday.

He added that to increase the blood compensation, it needs a process to amend the current agreement.

Every year at the beginning of the dry season, the Rizeigat of Eastern Darfur and other pastoral communities migrate southward from their settlements in Sudan in search of water points and grazing grounds for their livestock.

The blood compensation deal is aimed at preventing revenge attacks, and the general conflict between the border communities.
