The Twic and Misseriya Arab communities have reached an agreement on blood compensation for 15 people killed during a cattle-related conflict between 2023 and 2024.
Majang Ayuel Nyuol, chairperson of the Peace Mediation
Committee, stated that the Misseriya community will pay 434 cattle in
compensation to the Twic for 14 of the deceased.
In turn, the Twic community will pay 31 cattle as
compensation for one person from the Misseriya side.
“We came up with this with the main reason of re-resigning peace
between us. Since we signed peace in 2018, both Misseriya and twic, are guided
by the rules that have been signed. Those rules are the ones having the article
talking of recovery of cattle and blood compensation of anyone killed
accidentally,” Nyuol stated.
Sadik Jabon, chairperson of the Misseriya pastoralists, said
they have begun collecting cattle for the blood compensation of those killed
from the Twic community, in an effort to restore peace between the two
communities.
“Since we signed the
peace in 2018 up to now, the peace is not progressing well. We ask ourselves ‘why
is peace not progressing?’. We realized that the problem is the cattle theft,” said
Jabon.
The blood compensation agreement, set to be finalized on
June 15, 2025, was reached during a peace conference held on April 26 in
Turalei, Warrap State, attended by 51 stakeholders 26 from the Twic community
and 25 from the Misseriya.
As part of broader efforts to foster peaceful coexistence,
Twic County authorities are working to recover 163 of 280 cattle raided by
armed youth, which will be returned to the Misseriya pastoralists.
