Turalei Teacher who sells food meant for learners under police custody

A teacher in Wunrok Payam is being held for allegedly selling food items meant for the school feeding program in Twic County, Warrap state.

Police say he is charged with siphoning 50 kilograms of sorghum and a cartoon of cooking oil meant to support learners in Turalei Primary School.

The suspect, whose name has been withheld, was reportedly arrested at a bus station while attempting to flee for Wau on Saturday.

He has being detained in Wunrok town .

Lieutenant Colonel Atem Deng Atem, Inspector of Police in Wunrok Payam said the arrest came following a complain launched by education officials.

He said it was realized that at least 29 bags of sorghum have not been delivered to the school as expected.

Lt. Colonel Deng mentioned that 11 bags of sorghum were recovered from a trader the teacher who bought the items.

“Nothing will help him when he is taken to court because he misused public funds,” he stated.

“It is not good to do something that damages the [name of the] community.  It is better to do something good so that people can appreciate you that you are honest and even they will talk about your honesty in future,” Lt. Col. Deng advised.

The food items are part of the monthly donation for selected schools from the Joint Aid Management, or JAM organization.
