Turalei lovers detained over abortion

Police in Turalei town, Twic County, have arrested a young man and his girlfriend accused of terminating a five-month pregnancy.

The suspects are 22-year-old Wol Kuot Deng and his teenage girlfriend only identified as A, 16.

According to the area police, the girl admitted to swallowing drugs that Wol had given to interfere with the pregnancy.

After they committed the act, the lovebirds left the fetus in a hut.

“We arrested them and they accepted committing the act but we are still investigating what inspired them,” Brigadier General Marko Mawien, director of Police Department in Twic County – told Mayardit FM.

The two young people are said to be in violation of Article 264 of the South Sudan Penal Code Act 2008.

The article stipulates that every person who by deceit causes any other person who is not lawfully married to him or her to cohabit or have sexual intercourse, commits an offence.

It adds that, upon conviction, the offender shall be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or with a fine or with both.
