Tonj North court fines husband killer

A court in Tonj North County, Warrap State, has ordered a wife to pay 11 cows as blood compensation for the death of her husband.

In January, Adut Achuil Lual was detained on suspicion that she beat Athian Akech, 60, to death at their home in Agaker village, Makuok Payam.

Athian, police said, had tried to get Adut to get him tobacco from their neighbor’s house, in vain. After fetching the stimulant himself, he allegedly lured Adut into their hut and hit her with a stick for disobeying him.

“In defense, she repeatedly hit her husband on the head, leaving him in a severe coma,” said Sgt. Daniel Deng, head of Makuok Payam Police Station.

Sgt. Deng said Adut had left her husband unconscious in the hut, adding that it was a neighbor who discovered Athian’s lifeless body later on.

“We found that they are one family. They have grown up children. We ordered that she pays the late’s family 11 cows. Adut’s brother will raise the blood compensation,” Ayom Ayom, president of Makuak Payam Regional Court, announced the verdict on Wednesday.

He added that Adut will bw released when his brother has handed over the 11 cows.
