Suspect arrested following burning of church in Twic County

Police in Twic County of Warrap state have detained a man for questioning over the burning of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan in Turalei town.

The church at Kuac Agok village was burnt to ashes on Saturday night.

Police apprehended the suspect on Monday in Mayen Abun after church officials opened a case against him. They alleged the suspect had earlier threatened to destroy the church – making him a person of interest in the case.

“There must be something behind this burning of church because in June, there was an attempt to burn the same church. The government will not allow anyone doing this to go without accountability,” said Brigadier General Marko Mawien Madut, Director of Police in Twic County.

General Mawien announced the deployment of police officers to protect churches from arson.

“I want to tell the church believers that the government will assign some police officers to patrol at night around churches in the area. If anyone found at night near any church roaming without a reason, then he or she will be arrested and taken to court,” he declared.

Brigadier General Mawien said the accused will be arraigned in court after investigations are completed.

Ngor Mangong, the Bishop of the ECSS Diocese of Gogrial West, Gogrial East and Twic Counties Abraham has condemned the destruction of the church.
