SSPDF driver to be tried over road carnage

A driver who knocked down four people in Lakes State at the weekend is expected to be arraigned soon, an official has said.

On Saturday morning, authorities say the four men were riding on a motorcycle when the army pickup with a registration plate number SSPDF 0838 rammed into them, killing two along the Aluakluak-Payii road.

Police identified the deceased as Aluakluak Mabor Rin, 24, and Mading Majak Mading, 30. Both men died on spot.

The other two, Marial Manyiel Aluk and Walden Anhiak, sustained injuries.

The accused driver, Majur Mayook, who survived the head-collision unscathed, immediately fled the scene, according to eyewitnesses. He was apprehended in Rumbek East County later that day.

“The cause of the accident is over speeding. But an investigation is now going on and the wounded people are receiving treatment at a Rumbek hospital,” said Lt. Col. Moses Machuoc Bol, acting police spokesperson in the state.

He blamed the road carnage on reckless driving. Officials said the pickup belonged to the Wounded Heroes department at the Ministry of Defense and Veterans’ Affairs.
