South Sudan recalls diplomat to UN over alleged sexual abuse

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has suspended a South Sudanese diplomat to the UN following allegations of rape in New York, United States.

Charles Dickens Oliha has also been recalled to Juba.

He has been charged with raping a woman in an apartment in Manhattan. A woman claimed Oliha followed her to her apartment and raped her twice.

Over the weekend, the American police briefly arrested Oliha and took him in for questioning.

He was later released – reportedly – due to his diplomatic immunity.

The 46-year-old has been flown to Juba.

In a statement seen by The Radio Community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it recalled the diplomat for further investigation.

It reiterated South Sudan’s commitment to punish any misconduct by its diplomats.

‘Indeed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs position that sexual misconduct in any shape or form is heinous and wholly unacceptable,’’ the statement partly read.

The government further pledge to work together with relevant authorities in the U.S to take appropriate actions after the outcome of the investigation.
