A soldier of division 11 in a military base in Warrap reportedly shot dead his colleague before escaping from the scene, said police in Tonj.
According to the police inspector of Tonj North, Col. Mayen Chol the incident happened in a military unit in Warrap town, and the soldiers were part of the disarmament team deployed in Tonj North County.
The deceased succumbed to bullet shots at Wau teaching hospital where he was rushed for treatment on Wednesday June 28, 2023.
Chol says the deceased is identified as Bol Makuei, age 30, and the suspect is Sgt. Manut Angony, age 35 who is on the run with another 1st lieutenant officer.
“The incident occurred around 8:00 pm on Wednesday at the military, the soldier shot his colleague and ran away, and it is suspected the culprit was under alcohol influence after bottles of siko and star gins were found on the ground,’’ Col. Mayen Chol told Mayardit 90.7 FM.
Article 206 of the South Sudan Penal Code 2008 states that whoever causes the death of another person— with the intention of causing death or knowing that death would be probable commits the offense of murder.
“And upon conviction be sentenced to death or imprisonment for life and may also be
liable to a fine; provided that, if the nearest relatives of the deceased opt for customary blood compensation, the Court may award it in lieu of death sentence with imprisonment for a term not exceeding ten years,” it reads.
