Six new cases of anthrax registered at Kuajok hospital

Two people have reportedly died from anthrax while six new cases have been registered at Kuajok main hospital in Warrap state, a medical officer has said.

The cases were detected last month.

Anthrax is a serious infectious disease caused by gram-positive, rod-shaped bacteria known as Bacillus anthracis. It occurs naturally in soil and commonly affects domestic and wild animals around the world. People can get sick with anthrax if they come in contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products.

Akier Akier, a Surveillance Officer in Gogrial West County said the cases confirmed by the State Ministry of Health were detected in Mathiang Monyjoc, Mayom Alek South, Twic County and other parts of Warrap state.

He said disease is common among adults and children.

“My advised to the residents is to stop eating dead meat to prevent the infection. People are affected in the cattle camps…the two people who died of anthrax is because they delayed at home,”Akier stated.

He disclosed that they were able to treat 86 cases of anthrax between February and July at Kuajok hospital.

Akier, however, reported that the hospital lacks enough antibiotics drugs to treat anthrax patients.

He said they give prescription and direct patients to purchase drugs from private clinics.
