Rumbek demolition protests death toll rises

Another person has reportedly succumbed to gunshot injuries sustained in the protests against forceful demolition exercise in Rumbek town, Lakes State.

This brings to two the number of protestors killed in the riots after a 10-year-old boy was shot dead on Tuesday morning.

The latest victim has been identified as Mangar Riel Rol-jak, 25, who was shot in the chest. He died on Wednesday receiving medical attention at a hospital in the area.

“The cause of Mangar’s death was that, a bullet passed through his liver. A medical team did an operation successfully. But the liver damage resulted in his death at 2:00 Am,” said Dr. Terran Madit Terran, medical director at Rumbek State Hospital.

The Akuach area demolition exercise turned violent when area residents clashed with security forces on Tuesday.

The protestors, according to police, pelted the security forces with stones and sticks, forcing the soldiers to open gunfire.

But the state minister of information earlier rejected the reports, claiming the security officers di not shoot anyone.
