Rainstorm destroys houses, shops in Kapoeta town

A rainstorm destroyed several homes and shops on Wednesday in Kapoeta town of Eastern Equatoria state.

The downpour began at around 3AM to 7AM. It blew off the roofs of several facilities.

A resident at Palakal residential area, Alfred Taban lost five rooms during the storm.

“Heavy wind has destroyed five houses and also destroyed toilets…no one was harmed. Now life will be so bad for us as a family.”

Most of the shops in Kapoeta main market were destroyed, including a phone charging shop belonging to Abraham Wut.

“It was a heavy wind that started raining this morning that has taken the roof of my shop – spoiling everything, including people’s phones have been destroyed…like 4 phones and 10 phone batteries,” he said.

Wut added that four children were also inside the house whose roof was blown off, but no one was hurt.

“When it rained, they feared to rescue phones because they are just children. Now my life is hard, I don’t know how I will pay these items,” he lamented.

Joseph Lokitoe is a retailer in the same market. He said his food items have been washed away by the heavy rain. He told Singaiti FM that the shop has been his only source of income.

“I was still sleeping, I found myself without a roof. All my items in the shop like beans and maize flour I used to sell have been destroyed.”
