The movement
of vehicles along the Bor-Juba highway resumed on Monday, according to the
chairperson of the Drivers' Union in Bor.
This came
five days after the union suspended public service due to insecurity after a
deadly fighting in Mongalla.
Officials
said unidentified gunmen attacked Pibor cattle traders at Mogiri, resulting in
the deaths of 22 people, nine of whom were traders.
However, Deng
Jool Deng said although the road is now relatively safe, the union has
requested security escorts.
“We tried to
coordinate with the two authorities in Jonglei and Central Equatoria State to
at least provide us with security while travelling,” Deng told Mingkaman FM on
Tuesday.
“And if the
government responds quickly to our request, it would be very good.”
When
contacted, the minister for Local Government and Law Enforcement in Jonglei
said they are looking forward to the government of central Equatoria State to
help maintain security on that road.
“This is
because the biggest stretch of the road where insecurity incidents have been
recorded is in Central Equatoria,” Simon Hoth stated.
Efforts to
reach central Equatoria State authorities and the national army, which has a
base at Mogiri, were not immediately successful.
