Police in Aweil arrest ARC workers after discovering body of a defiled girl

At least 52 workers of the Africa Resource Corporation company have been taken into police custody after a dead girl was found near the base of the company in Aweil West County, Northern Bahr el Ghazal.

Police said the body of a 13-year-old girl was found in a drainage near the compound of the construction company in Odhum Payam on Tuesday.

The girl had reportedly gone missing at Maper Akot in Aweil town since Sunday

Captain Guot Guot Akol, the spokesperson of the State Police said medical examination shows that the child was defiled before being killed.

He stated the people taken in for questioning are staffs who were on duty when the body of the girl was found.

“The body was found by residents yesterday in the water drainage. There are many people living in the compound there. We brought them here yesterday to explain clearly who defiled the child and who killed her, because she was found in their compound,” Captain Guot disclosed.

He urged the relatives of the deceased to remain calm and allow the police to investigate the matter.

Dr. Wol Wol Akeen, the Medical Director of Aweil civil hospital confirmed that the child was indeed sexually abused and killed.

“What we found after the body was brought here, we have put it in a written document and we sent it to the police to complete their investigations.”

He asked parents to take care of their children.

“When parents allow kids to move freely and stay with people who are not related to them, it can be risky,” Dr. Wol said.

In May, a similar incident happened in Aweil after a Sudanese trader defiled and murdered 5-year-old Abuk Lual.

The high court later found Saber Abu Sam guilty and sentenced him to death by hanging.

Early this week, the Court of Appeal in Wau upheld the death sentence.
