New setback befalls peace deal as kiir fires Angelina

A new challenge as been foreseen in the peace deal implementation after the ruling party, SPLM-IG, grabbed defense ministry from the SPLM-IO.

The spokesperson of the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar – who is the leader of the SPLM-IO – said the dismissal of Angelina Teny as defense minister and swapping of defense and interior ministries are the latest violation of the 2018 peace agreement.

“The Republican decree issued this evening ( Friday) by president Salva Kiir on relieve of Hon. Angelina Teny and switch of ministries of Defense & Veterans Affairs and Interior is unilateral and a new cycle of violating the Revitalized Agreement,” Puok Both Baluang wrote on his social media page.

President Salva Kiir issued a republic decree on Friday, relieving the minister of defense and veteran Affairs Angelina Teny and Interior minister Mahmoud Solomon.

The president also swapped the security ministries, taking the defense ministry to the SPLM-IG and giving the interior ministry to the SPLM-IO.

Based on the consensus agreed upon in the executive portfolios according to the revitalized peace agreement of the 2018, Ministry of Defense and Veterans Affairs is allocated to Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) and the Ministry of Interior to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Government (SPLM-IG).

The decree came barely 8 days after the extension of the transitional period of the roadmap.
